Carpet Calculator
Carpet comes off a roll 12 or 15 feet wide, so you buy full-width strips, not just floor area. A 13 ft room on a 12 ft roll needs a second strip and a seam.
How this calculator works
- Tries running the carpet both ways and keeps the orientation that uses less carpet.
- Strips = room width ÷ roll width, rounded up; each strip is the room length plus 6 inches for trimming.
- Pad is ordered by net area; tack strip runs the perimeter.

How do I convert square feet to square yards?
Divide by 9. A 12×14 room is 168 sq ft, or 18.7 sq yd.
Why is my carpet quote bigger than the room?
Because of roll width. Any room wider than the roll needs another full-width strip, and the offcut is often too narrow to use.
Where should seams go?
Out of main traffic paths and, ideally, running toward the main light source so they are less visible.
