🪵 Deck Build Template
Complete guide and calculator suite for building your outdoor deck from the ground up
Project Overview
Building a deck involves careful planning of structural components, framing, and decking materials. This template guides you through calculating everything from concrete footings to the final deck boards.
Calculators You'll Need
Use these calculators in sequence to plan your complete deck build:
1. Concrete Calculator
Calculate concrete needed for footings and posts. Essential for deck structural support.
Start Concrete →2. Lumber & Framing Calculator
Calculate joists, beams, posts, and all structural lumber. Includes detailed cut lists.
Start Framing →3. Decking Materials (Optional)
Calculate deck boards and surface materials if using composite or specialty materials.

- ✓ Post bases and anchors
- ✓ 4×4 or 6×6 posts
- ✓ 2×8 or 2×10 joists
- ✓ 2×8 or 2×10 beams
- ✓ Joist hangers and hardware
- ✓ Ledger board (if attached to house)
Decking & Finishing
- ✓ Deck boards (5/4×6 or 2×6)
- ✓ Deck screws (exterior rated)
- ✓ Railing materials
- ✓ Stain or sealer
- ✓ Flashing tape (for ledger)
- ✓ Lag bolts and washers
- ✓ Post caps (optional)
Build Sequence
Site Preparation & Layout
Mark deck location, check local codes, obtain permits if needed
Footings & Posts
Dig holes, pour concrete footings, install posts with proper spacing
Beams & Ledger
Install ledger board (if attached), set beams on posts
Joists & Framing
Install joists with proper spacing (16" O.C.), add blocking if needed
Decking
Install deck boards, ensure proper spacing for drainage
Railings & Finishing
Install railings, stairs, apply stain/sealer
💡 Pro Tips
- •Check local codes first: Deck height, railing requirements, and footing depth vary by location. Get permits before starting.
- •Use pressure-treated lumber: All lumber in contact with ground or concrete should be pressure-treated (PT) for longevity.
- •Footing depth matters: Footings must extend below frost line (varies by region) to prevent heaving.
- •Plan for drainage: Deck should slope slightly (1/8" per foot) away from house for water runoff.
- •Joist spacing is critical: Standard is 16" O.C., but some composite decking requires 12" O.C. Check manufacturer specs.
- •Save calculations: Use "My Project" to track all materials across concrete, lumber, and decking calculators.
